Prayer That Heals

James 5:15. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. (James 5:15)

In Today’s Word, we are given a profound promise: if your prayer is offered in faith, it will bring healing to the sick. God Himself will heal them. This is not merely a strong conviction or a hopeful sentiment; it is a spiritual reality. We live in the constant presence of the Triune God: God the Father speaks and fulfills His Word; God the Son breaks the power of sin, Satan, and hell; and God the Spirit works powerfully in us and through us. Because our God is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8), our faith stands on an unshakeable foundation—Jesus Christ, our Lord.

History shows that people of prayer never failed. They were individuals of such spiritual depth that the world was not worthy of them (Hebrews 11:38). To follow in their footsteps, we must fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. He endured the cross and its shame for the joy set before Him, eventually sitting down at the right hand of the throne of God. By considering Him and His endurance, we find the strength to ensure we do not grow weary or lose heart (Hebrews 12:2-3).

God has never worked through unbelief. We see a sobering warning in the forty years following the Exodus, where an entire generation of unbelievers disappeared into history without ever entering the Promised Land. Conversely, nothing could consume those who walked in faith. God always led those who trusted Him into total victory. We also see this in David’s confession that he lacked nothing because the Lord was his shepherd (Psalms 23:1), and in Isaiah’s promise that those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength and soar on wings like eagles (Isaiah 40:31).

What was it about the Roman officer’s faith that so impressed Jesus (Matthew 8:5-13)? Jesus remarked that He had not seen such faith in all of Israel. This officer had a complete, unwavering trust in the Word. He didn’t need a sign or a physical touch; he believed that if Jesus simply “said the word,” his servant would be healed. He acknowledged Jesus as the Creator of life who governs the universe by His command. To him, the Word of God was enough. Your situation may seem as hopeless as that of the dying servant, but when Jesus speaks, restoration begins.

We see this same power in the woman with the bleeding disorder (Mark 5:25-34). After twelve years of misery and hopeless medical treatments, one encounter with Christ was enough. Her prayer was a silent act of faith: “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” The moment she reached out, her suffering ended. Jesus confirmed the source of her restoration, declaring, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.”

Today, the world desperately needs this healing. It needs healing from the condition of being “under the power of the devil” (Acts 10:38), healing from broken hearts and minds (Matthew 11:28), and healing from physical disease (Acts 8:4-8). This restoration comes only from a complete reliance on God’s covenant—His living Word. The Word is sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating to the very marrow of our bones and judging the thoughts and feelings of our hearts (Hebrews 4:12).

This is why we must commit to a continual “Word movement” in our mission fields, proclaiming only Jesus’ Life, Jesus’ Power, and Jesus’ Healing. Renew your faith in the Word today. Speak that Word to the “dry bones” in your life and community (Ezekiel 37:1-14), and you will see them come to life. Never stop praying, for the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective (James 5:16).

Prayer. Father, I thank You for bringing healing to my spirit and my soul through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help me to hold onto only Your Word, only Christ, only the Holy Spirit, only prayer, and only evangelism throughout my life. Let my faith be a vessel for Your healing power in this world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
