Matthew 4:19. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
Evangelism is speaking about the evidence of the living God in your life. Jesus called you because He wanted you. You did not choose Him; He chose you and appointed you. Why? To be with Him, to send you out to preach, and to give you authority to drive out demons (Mk 3:13-15).
When you are with Jesus, He makes you extraordinary. “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and took note that these men had been with Jesus” (Ac 4:13).
God confirms His presence by fulfilling His Word in your life, by breaking the power of Satan, sin, and hell, and by working mightily through the Holy Spirit. Through Christ, the presence of the Triune God becomes a reality in you, and His kingdom comes upon you. Jesus called you to proclaim the gospel. Evangelism is simply testifying how God has been with you.
Many believers have misconceptions about evangelism. Some think it is only for those with special gifts or training. But evangelism is not a task—it is a natural movement of life for those who have received life. If the blood of Christ has saved you, evangelism is introducing Jesus to those still under the power of the devil (Ac 10:38). That’s why evangelism is one of the greatest blessings given to us. Satan fears it and will do anything to stop it.
Why did Jesus give us authority over demons? Because “the whole world is under the control of the evil one” (1 Jn 5:19). In Jesus’ name, you will break the grip of darkness over people’s minds and today’s culture. He will enable you to communicate the gospel across all languages and tribes, exposing the devil’s schemes. God has given you spiritual authority to trample on snakes and scorpions. He will deliver you from all harm (Lk 10:19). He calls you to bring His healing to those suffering in spirit, mind, and body.
Proclaiming the testimony of God is more powerful than any eloquent speech. The only message the world needs is Jesus Christ and Him crucified: “My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power” (1 Cor 2:1-4). The highest wisdom is knowing the living God. The most powerful speech is proclaiming Christ. The greatest demonstration is the work of the Holy Spirit.
When the Lord’s hand is with you, a great number of people will believe and turn to the Lord (Ac 11:21). People will see the evidence of God’s grace in your life (Ac 11:23). God’s eternal blessing for the house of His servant will be known to everyone (2 Sam 7:29). That’s evangelism.
Evangelism is the best way to experience Christ living in you. “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Mt 28:20). That was the conclusion of the Great Commission Jesus gave to His disciples and to us. With that promise, we, too, should go and find those disciples of all nations.
When we evangelize, God’s power is revealed. When Peter and John proclaimed Jesus, the destiny of the crippled man was permanently changed from a child of the devil to a child of God. The entire city heard the good news that Jesus is the Christ (Ac 3:1-12).
God calls His people for evangelism and missions in unexpected places, times, and people. Philip was led by an angel to an Ethiopian official to proclaim Christ (Ac 8:26). Peter realized God’s plans for all peoples and nations, which led to the salvation of Cornelius and his household (Ac 10:3-23). Paul and Silas, imprisoned unjustly, found God’s plan—to save the jailer and his family (Ac 16:31).
Evangelism is not something we do but the result of the working of the Holy Spirit: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Ac 1:8). We do not do evangelism but witness it. Thus, a life as a witness of Christ is the life best lived.
Jesus invites you to follow Him now. His call comes with a promise. “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Mt 4:19). Following Jesus means saving lives. Nothing is more urgent than leading someone to Christ. Nothing is more important than asking God to send workers into His harvest (Mt 9:38). Nothing is more fulfilling than embracing and living out the Great Commission in our generation and beyond.
You have been given the name of Jesus, the name above all names. Through Him, you have the privilege of divine communication with the Father. God’s angel armies will surround and protect you. God will bring healing and restoration to the world through you. Christ Himself will work through you, confirming His Word with signs and wonders (Mk 16:20). “The message of the Lord will spread rapidly and be honored” (2 Thess 3:1).
Prayer. Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to follow You. Fill me with the power of the Holy Spirit so that I may stand as Your witness to the ends of the earth. In Your mighty name, Amen.
